A native of New England (USA), soprano Margaret Hunter regularly performs repertoire from the 11th to the 21st centuries. A specialist in the music of the Renaissance and Baroque, her performances on the opera stage, on numerous prize-winning recordings, and in concert halls throughout Europe, Asia, and North America have been hailed by critics as “mesmerizing, dulcet, and glorious” (Cleveland Plain Dealer), “moving” (Early Music), and “sweet and lyrical with phenomenal expressivity” (klassik.com).
She has presented recitals and appeared in concerts at international festivals all over the world, and has performed as a soloist with renowned early music ensembles such as Cantus Cölln, the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, RIAS Kammerchor, Capella de la Torre, Sirius Viols (Hille Perl, Dir.), Rheinische Kantorei (Hermann Max, Dir.), Musica Fiata (Roland Wilson, Dir.), B’Rock Orchestra (Belgium), the Balthasar Neumann Choir and Orchestra, Ensemble Weser-Renaissance, the Orlando di Lasso Ensemble, the Egidius Kwartet (Holland), Cantus Thuringia, Les Amis de Phillipe (Ludger Remy, Dir.), and the Marais Consort, among others.
In addition to numerous radio and CD recordings, Ms. Hunter is an active participant in early opera, having performed such roles as Esther in Handel’s Esther, Belinda and Dido in Henry Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, Aréthuze in Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s Actéon, David in Charpentier’s David et Jonathas, Cupid in John Blow’s Venus and Adonis, La Musicienne in Jean-Baptiste Lully’s Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme, Messagiera and La Musica in Claudio Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo, Daphne in Jacopo Peri’s L'Euridice, and Angelica in Franz Joseph Haydn’s Orlando Paladino.
Educated at Pomona College (California, USA), University College (Oxford, UK), Longy School of Music (Boston, USA), and the Hochschule für Künste (Bremen, Germany), her teachers and coaches have included Harry van der Kamp, Stephen Stubbs, Jane Bryden, and Laurie Monahan. Ms. Hunter was the recipient of a Musicians’ Fellowship from the Deutsche Akademische Austauschdienst and lives in Northern Germany.
